An obituary by Felix McKILLOP in the Irish News, Oct 1993, says: THE HURLING
WORLD LOSES A PURIST. Dan Gibson, one of Antrim's most accomplished hurlers,
passed away recently at the age of 78 years. A native of Libbert, Glenarm, Dan
came from a family of distinguished hurlers - eldest brother James played
with distinction during the 20s and 30s while another brother, Arthur, was a
county regular during the 30s. Gibson was brought into the county minor team
in 1933 when Antrim won the Ulster Championship. The same year he and his
two brothers helped Glenarm Shauns reach the county senior hurling
championship final. His skilful stickwork and tenacious tackling earned him
a call up to the county senior ranks in 1935. In his first match against
Down, the Glenarm man scored a goal and a point. When the local Shauns club
could not field a team in 1937, Dan, along with five of his fellow clubmen,
joined Glenariffe Ossians. That year Ossians won the senior hurling
championship. Dan scored a goal in the final against Sarsfields. The
following year Ossians advanced to the final of the senior championship again.
The Irish News reported that "Dan Gibson served up classical hurling and had
the centrefield to himself". Still a county regular in 1939 he was moved into
defence as Antrim saw off Cork in the All-Ireland Junior hurling semi-final.
In the final against Galway, which Antrim lost, the Irish News recorded that
"Dan GIBSON's countering and lengthy ground drives earned him pride of place
in defence...his skill was equal to any of the Galway men." At the age of 42
years he was coaxed out of retirement to help the reformed St Joseph's
Glenarm club win the 1957 all county junior championship. Dan Gibson is
remembered by those who were privileged to watch him in his prime as one of
Antrim's best ever hurlers. His death brings the curtain down on an era when
hurling was played as the purists enjoyed it - first time striking on ground
and air.
