[488] John is the man who fell to his death while tending sheep
on Scawt Hill in 1869 as reported in the Larne Weekly Reporter (6 Nov 1969):
"On Sunday 31 October 1869, a man named MATTHEWS residing at Gowkstown
proceeed to look after some sheep after his care at Scawt Hill and while
crossing a path over a precipice, his foot slipped and he was hurled to the
bottom, causing instantaneous death." The registered cause of death was
"Accidental death having fallen from a cliff; instantaneous death; certified.
Information received from Alexander MARKHAM, coroner for Co. Antrim."
