In Balteagh Presbyterian graveyard, there is an old stone lying flat which
reads: In memory of Joseph PERRY late of Ballyleighery who died 2nd Jan 1872
aged 73 years. Also his wife Elizabeth who died 18 Dec 1880 aged 85 years.
Also his son Edward who died 17 May 1860 ages 32 years. Also his son John
who died 21 July 1870 aged 36 years. Also his son Benjamin who died 26 March
1842 aged 14 years. Also his daughter Betty Anne who died 17 Aug 1830, aged
[514]
15 years. Also his daughter Sarah who died 16 Sep 1892 aged 74 years.
Joseph PERRY's family is pieced together on the assumption that there was only
one Joseph PERRY in the Parish of Balteagh at that. There is no more evidence
as yet to confirm or disprove this theory. The family group is basically a
combination of the offspring mentioned on the horizontal PERRY gravestone in
the Balteagh graveyard, female PERRYs found in marriage records citing Joseph
PERRY as their father and of course the Joseph PERRY who married Letitia
COWAN. However it is notable that the Joseph PERRY of Maine registered this
Joseph PERRY's death. In the 1831 census, there are no PERRY households in
the parish of Balteagh. However in Ballyness in the parish of Dungiven there
is a Joseph PIEREY listed. The household consists of one presbyterian family
of five males and six females (no servants).
