Felix McKILLOP writes: In 1938 an old house and adjoining blacksmith's shop at
Drumcrow were condemned by the authorities and ordered to be vacated. The
blacksmith, James BOYLE, who was a tenant in the house was forced out and was
left with no means of earning a living. James BOYLE was born in Drumcrow in
1886. When he left school he followed his father's trade - blacksmithing.
When World War 1 began in 1914 he enlisted in the army and later fought in
France. The war ended in 1918 and James returned to his blacksmith's forge at
Drumcrow. When the court summons forced him to vacate his premises in August
1938, a poem "The Blacksmith of Drumcrow" was written about his dilemma. The
poet used the pen-name "Shortfellow" but this was believed to be Hugh Kelly
who lived at Owencloughy, a short distance away. For some time following the
eviction order the future for James looked bleak but two months later nearly
50 people from the local area wrote to the Larne Rural Council requesting them
to take steps to provide a home for the evicted blacksmith. A local committee
was formed to raise funds to build a smith shop for Mr. BOYLE. The smith's
shop was built at Aughagash on a site donated by David DAVIDSON. The British
Legion in Larne supplied a pair of bellows for the forge. When James BOYLE
retired he went to live with his son in Glenarm. He died in 1981 aged 95
years.
