A Christmas card to Whiteabbey dated 9 December 1983, 8 Fourth Avenue,
Teignmouth, S Devon]
Dear Pat (or one of the family), I just don't know if you will remember me or
not. Often and often I did intend to write you. I think the last time I saw
you was at my brother Gerry's funeral RIP that is many years ago. After he
died I was crossing the road one day when I was knocked down by a mad cyclist
as a result I received a fractured leg, broken knee and wrist which left me
helpless. My sister Winnie was a widow with 3 of a family living over here
so I decided to sell my house and come over here where I have been for past
12-14 years. I like to try to keep in touch with old friends if possible so
would like to hear from you or one of the family. God bless all now and
always. Love and prayers for all, your affectionate cousin, E Gibson
[Patsy MULHOLLAND and Jack MULVENNA responded to this card but heard nothing
more from Elizabeth GIBSON, however Anthony MULVENNA corresponded with her.
This is part of her response to him regarding her MULVENNA relations, dated
circa 1981] Patrick
and Elizabeth MULVENNA, my grandparents, your great-grandparents, home farm
was at Deerpark, just a short distance from where your brother Charlie lives
only on opposite side of road. There were 17 of a family. I never heard all
their names. My mother (RIP) married William GIBSON who came home on holiday
after 12 years in USA and Canada. He wanted to go back there but my mother
(RIP) wouldn't go so he (RIP) bought our pub in Church St. Many years after
he bought another one at the corner of Broadway and Wellington Street, but the
buyer turned it into a butchers shop and I think it is still there. The
brothers Patrick, Charles and James went to Australia and died there. My
mother's (RIP) sister Elizabeth TIERNEY went to Dublin after her husband died.
There was a family of 3 girls and 1 boy, all dead and gone now. The other
sister Martha McCARTNEY went to Dublin for a short time, then emigrated to
Kenya, Africa, family 2 girls and 1 boy, all dead and gone. Robert was my
mother's (RIP) brother, he died in Liverpool. The KEELANDs were no relations,
my mother and your grandfather were brother and sister, your father and I were
cousins.
