John COWAN's household is listed in the 1831 census for the townland of
Greenan, Faughanvale, Co Derry. There are a total of 21 households in the
townland including two with single COWAN women, namely Mary and Elizabeth
COWAN. John COWAN's household is the largest comprising 17 people (14 family
and 3 servants, 2 Roman Catholics and 15 Presbyterians). In the observations
column, an "S" presumably denotes a family of Scots descent. The townland is
predominantly Presbyterian - there are 4 Catholic households and 3 of the
established church. No gravestone for John COWAN or his wife could be found
in the Faughanvale Presbyterian graveyard, near the town of Eglinton. (Search
made in Autumn 1993). In the 1740 Protestant Householders' index, there are 3
entries for the Greenan townland, namely: William HANNAH, Hugh COWAN and
William COWAN. Letitia COWAN is the only child of John COWAN and Mary HUNTER
listed in the Faughanvale baptism records (PRONI MIC 1P/190) from 1 Dec 1819
to 3 May 1840.
