Sponsors at baptism: James & Martha GIBSON
Mary MULVENNA wrote a letter to William MULVENNA, informing him of their
brother's death in Australia. The letter is dated 19 May 1914.
Immigration records show: Patrick MULVENA, male, single, aged 24, arrived on
the Winifred, 1359 tons, Captain FAWKES. Sailed from London on 4 Oct 1873,
and arrived Brisbane on 14 Jan 1874.
[188]
A Patrick MULVENA is listed in the following Queensland Post Office
Directories:
1892-1897: Eprapah Creek,
1900-1901: Farmer, Eprapah Creek,
1902-1914: Fruit grower, Mt Cotton.
In the years 1906-1914, the surname is spelt MULVENNA.
The inquiry into Patrick's death states: Deceased was a farmer 63 years of age
and resided at Mount Cotton near Cleveland. On 30 March last, deceased and
his son were clearing some land at Mount Cotton and occupied separate tents.
AT about 12.30pm they had dinner together and deceased seemed in his usual
health and spirits. After dinner each went to his tent for a spell. About
1.30pm the son went to catch his horse. Deceased accompanied him for a few
yards and then went back to his tent. After the son had gone about 200 yards
he heard the report of a rifle and immediately went back to the tents. He
found deceased sitting on his bunk with a rifle between his legs and a bullet
wound in his temple. The polikce were informed and removed the body to
Cleveland where Dr DODS held a post mortem examination and gave a certificate
as to the cause of death. Deceased had lately sold the land adjoining where
they were working and was always saying he regretted having done so. There
were no suspicious circumstances and death was clearly suicidal. Robyn
MULVENNA nee JONES wrote: "As you can see Patrick MULVENNA shot himself. I
spoke with Elizabeth (Patrick's daughter) some years ago and she was telling
me a bit of Patrick's history. Apparently Patrick was engaged to a girl in
Ireland and she dropped him and married his brother. At this time he as at
University and was very bright and doing well but when this happened he got on
a ship and came out to Australia. I don't think he kept in contact with his
family in Ireland at first but later on they did communicate. Gary's Aunt
Thelma tells the story that Patrick sold off some of his land to raise the
money for a trip home to Ireland just before he died. He had the money but
met up with a woman and she managed to separate him from this money. This is
why he shot himself."

[letter dated 26 May 1994] Dear Gerry, your nice letter received and glad to
hear from a long lost cousin from Ireland! Yes, my father was Dan O'CONNOR
but unfortunately he died when I was about 5 or 6 years old, so I know little
about him, sorry to say, so it was sad for me and my family. My sister
Bernadette died the next year or so - I can't remember exactly as I was so
young. My dear brother Eugene O'CONNOR took care of my mother and me - a very
good man, thank God. He was single and passed away in 1966 - my husband
George a good man, passed away in '75. So Gerry, this is some of my story and
I am 82 years old!!
